Death toll from Kano boat mishap rises to 30

The Kano government, on Thursday, said 30 bodies have been recovered from the boat mishap that occurred in Bagwai LGA of the state.

Murtala Garo, the state commissioner for local government affairs, said this when Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, led other government officials to disburse relief materials to the bereaved families.

Many of the victims are said to be women and children, which included some students of a Qur’anic school who were on their way to Tofa for an event.

TheCable had reported that the boat capsized on Tuesday as a result of overloading while carrying about 49 passengers from Badau village to Bagwai town.

As a result of the development, the state has banned the use of commercial boats for ferrying passengers on the Bagwai-Badau river.

The state government also said it has provided two buses for passengers travelling between between Badau and Bagwai, while three new boats would be procured for “effective water transportation” in the area.

Speaking on the incident on Wednesday, Muhammad Garba, Kano commissioner for information, had said the state government set up a committee to investigate the incident and provide measures to prevent such accidents.

Garba also said the committee will be chaired by Muhammad Abubakar-Alhassan, the naval base commander in the state.
