Death toll from Lagos explosion now 21 as another corpse is discovered

Another body has been discovered at the scene of the explosion which rocked Abule Ado in Amuwo Odofin local government area of Lagos state.

The explosion which occured on March 15 led to the loss of lives and the destruction of several cars and houses.

In a statement on Thursday, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, director-general of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said another corpse has been discovered, bringing the death toll to 21.

He said 468 persons were displaced from their homes, and that 100 of them are now in relief camp while two are missing.

“The teams continue to carry out recovery and salvage operations at the incident site. An additional body was retrieved today bringing the total number of fatalities to 21,” the statement read.

“468 people were displaced from their homes and 100 of them are now in the relief camp. Two missing. Our help desk remains manned and our personnel are available to manage enquiries and arrange transfer to the LASEMA relief camp for those who have need of shelter and food.

“We appeal for calm and urge members of the public to keep away from the scene. We will continue to provide updates.”

After the explosion, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, govenor of Lagos, set up a N2billion emergency relief fund for victims of the incident.
