Bashir Magashi, minister of defence, says Nigeria is at a critical point and it is necessary to limit distractions capable of escalating the security situation.

Magashi stated this on Monday while speaking at a security summit held at the National Defence College, in Abuja.

The defence minister called for collaboration among security agencies to achieve success in their operations against insurgents and other violent groups.

“We are in a critical situation that requires the understanding, buy-in, support and collaboration of important stakeholders and key players in this strategic national task,” he said.

“This is important to minimise distractions and maximise civil support in order to facilitate operational success and mission outcomes.”

Magashi noted that the summit is timely, since it is coming at a time when the country is battling “diverse manifestations of security threats”.

He also said the federal government has deployed “multi-dimensional efforts” to address the current security challenges which have emanated in different shades and forms.

“This summit is coming at a sobering time in the life of our dear nation — a time when merchants of violence are threatening to tear the very foundations of our nation; a time when diverse manifestations of security threats dot the landscape and impact individuals, communities and almost all sub-national entities in disconcerting ways; a time when fear and uncertainty pervades the land; a time when global indicators of national insecurity give room for serious concern,” Magashi added.

The defence minister’s comment comes amid rising security challenges, including mass abductions of schoolchildren in the northern part of the country, and the prevalence of other violent crimes.
