Felix Kabange, minister of health in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has confirmed that 600 people who fell sick on Saturday and were suspected to have contracted Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) have tested negative to the virus.
Kabange said on Monday in Kinshasa that the government and World Health Organisation (WHO) were investigating a possible outbreak about 270 km northeast of the capital.
He said the hunters developed Ebola-like symptoms, such as diarrhoea, vomiting and bloody urine, after eating sick antelope. He added that four of them had died.
“All of the samples are negative. There is no Ebola epidemic,” he announced.
Congo has had more outbreaks of the disease than any other country.
Since December 2013, the virus has killed more than 11,200 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea in the worst Ebola epidemic on record.
