Democrats closer to leading US congress as Raphael Warnock wins Georgia senate runoff

Raphael Warnock,  Democratic Party candidate, on Wednesday, won one of Georgia’s two senate runoff elections.

Warnock defeated Republican incumbent congresswoman Kelly Loeffler after polling 50.6 percent of the votes.

The runoff was held because none of the candidates in the November general election got the 50 percent votes needed for victory under state rules.

Warnock’s victory brings the Democratic Party a step closer to gaining control of congress.

Warnock would become the first black senator for the state of Georgia and the first Georgia Democrat elected to the senate in 20 years.

“We were told that we couldn’t win this election, but tonight, we proved that with hope, hard work, and the people by our side, anything is possible. So Georgia, I am honored by the faith that you have shown in me. And I promise you this tonight: I am going to the Senate to work for all of Georgia,” Warnock said in an address earlier on Wednesday.
