The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers says the fire outbreak at the state’s house of assembly is a “desecration of the legislature”.

Fire affected a section of the state house of assembly complex in Port Harcourt at about 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The fire affected the hallowed chamber of the assembly but firefighters reportedly stopped the inferno from razing the entire complex.

The incident came amid plans to initiate impeachment proceedings against Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers.

In a statement on Monday, Darlington Nwauju, APC spokesperson in Rivers, said politicians should not jeopardize the “fragile security of the state because of their political greed”.

“The Rivers State chapter of the APC condemns in very strong terms the destruction of public assets at the State Assembly complex,” Nwauju said.

“Last night’s arson attack on the hallowed chambers of the state assembly amounts to the desecration of the legislature.”

The APC spokesperson said the party had warned of an alleged plan by Nyesom Wike, immediate former governor of the state, to “emasculate” Rivers.
