Devakumar Edwin, vice-president of Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), says the refinery aims to conclude work on its main petrol unit by mid-August.

Edwin spoke during an interview on Friday with Platts, a part of S&P Global Commodity Insights.

Platts said Edwin gave the timeframe after the refinery stopped deliveries during a short-term maintenance period.

On August 1, the Dangote refinery had asked marketers to suspend all payments for petrol loading at its gantry.

However, earlier on Friday, Abubakar Garima, the national president of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), told TheCable that the refinery has commenced petrol sale to its partners after a one-week hiatus.

According to Platt, a second Dangote Group source said loadings of all white products, including petrol, diesel and jet fuel, continue alongside new crude deliveries.

Also, the publication said West African market sources said more trucks were leaving the refinery again, easing some short-term supply concerns.

Platt said the refinery has about two weeks of fuel reserves onsite to help smooth deliveries during maintenance work.

He said the works are part of “regular maintenance activity” and would be limited in scope, assuring that the unit would be fully functional before August 18.

“This is just part of regular maintenance activity,” Edwin said.

“We do predictive maintenance, preventative maintenance and routine maintenance.”

The publication also noted that Edwin denied a report that the refinery will undergo more substantive maintenance on its residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) unit for 40 days in December.

“Definitely not in December,” he said.

Platts said Edwin cited Nigeria’s seasonally high petrol demand in the final months of the year.

The publication added that the refinery has about two weeks of fuel reserves onsite to help smooth deliveries during maintenance work.
