Douye Diri, governor of Bayelsa, says suspects linked to the abduction of Ebiyerin Omukoro, a judge of the state high court, have been arrested.
Omukoro was abducted on June 21 in front of a popular eatery in the state capital and held captive for 12 days before he was rescued by security agencies.
Speaking on Wednesday during the state executive council meeting in Yenagoa, Diri said all members of the kidnap gang had been apprehended except their leader, who is still on the run.
“Bayelsa has zero tolerance for crime and criminality. We have greatly improved our crime-fighting capacity through technology,” the governor said.

“We summoned security agencies, gave them the necessary logistics, and they were able to rescue the judge unhurt. Everyone involved in the abduction has been picked up, except one.”
The governor also honoured Sentome Obi, a superintendent of police, who rejected a $17,000 bribe offered by a suspect.
He described Obi as a shining example of integrity, saying his action brought dignity to the Nigerian Police and pride to Bayelsa state.

Diri announced a reward of a three-bedroom flat and a car for Obi and recommended him to the inspector-general of police for promotion.
“At a time when the police is facing image challenges, SP Obi has proven that a good name is better than riches,” Diri added.
In his remarks, Francis Idu, the commissioner of police in the state, commended Obi’s dedication and urged the state government to continue supporting efforts to strengthen security.
