The singular genius that works alone is a myth from yesterday.

Gone are the days when cubicles and walled offices characterized the work environment. The new trend is an open-office layout that has been noted to foster conversation and team building among employees, not to mention that it has also opened up more space for staff and equipment.

There is a plethora of potential to joint creative effort; there is the spontaneity of ideas, the speed of experimentation, and the differing talents to tap from.

In recent times, collaboration seems to be the name of the game.

Despite stimulating conversation and teamwork however, the seemingly innovative open-office layout has also been noted to cause more disruption and distraction as well as decreasing creativity and productivity.

In the same vein, if the chemistry is not right, roles are not properly defined or the parties think and consequently act like they are in competition with each other, collaborations can be a nightmare!

This begs the question; does creativity really ride on the back of collaboration?

For many people, creativity is a solo affair. Truth be told, too much of others or not enough time alone compromises true reflection and creative discovery. Nevertheless, sometimes we get stuck.

While solitude has been noted to boost creativity, it pays to be open to diverse sources of influence
Diversity enhances creativity. It encourages the search for fresh information and perspectives, leading to better decision-making and problem solving.

A week ago, I held a very important project meeting and in attendance were experts in varied fields. Suffice to say, the conversations and suggestions were rich, stimulating and engaging. Tasks were highlighted and Value was exchanged.

Collaboration is about freedom. Allow and embrace minds that think differently from yours. They are able to provide that burst of creativity big enough to make the difference.
