Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud to clinch the 2023 French Open men’s singles title on Sunday.
Djokovic claimed a record 23rd Grand Slam title win after a 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over the Norwegian.
The victory lifts the 36-year-old to the Number 1 spot, taking over from Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
With a straightforward forehand, the Serbian won an epic first set 7-6 before seeing off Ruud 6-3 to claim the second set and 7-5 in the third.
Djokovic became the first man in history to win at least three titles at each Grand Slam — just one shy of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.
The win sees Djokovic surge past Rafael Nadal, establishing a men’s grand slam record.
Djokovic won his first Grand Slam title in 2008 at the Australian Open, which he has won ten times.
He has also won seven Wimbledon titles and three US Open gongs.
