Catholic bishops in New York have berated US President Donald Trump over his latest histrionic.

On Saturday, Trump shared an AI-generated image of himself dressed as Pope. The White House reposted the image on its X account.

Francis Bergoglio, the last Pope of the Catholic Church, died on April 21, after a protracted illness.

He was buried outside the Vatican at the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Italy.

Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Prince William were among the dignitaries at the funeral.

Replying to Trump, the bishops, via the New York State Catholic Conference X handle, said there was nothing clever or funny about the image.

The also noted that the process of selecting a new Pope is under way.

“There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President,” the post reads.

“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”

Last week, Trump jokingly told a group of journalists that he would like to become the new head of the Catholic Church.
