Students in Ekiti have warned politicians in the state not to drag the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) into the political theatre ahead of the state’s governorship election.
The students, under the Coalition for the Advancement of Ekiti State (COAED) and FUOYE’s chapter of the Ekiti Student Union, also warned the politicians not to turn the uniiversity into a “campaign ground”.
The groups made the call in response to what the “politicisation of academic activities at FUOYE.”
Gbolade Oguntomole, executive secretary of COAED, said: “It is disheartening that politicians from Ekiti, rather than look for ways to assist FUOYE to grow fast, have been more interested in using elements in the school to score falsely procured cheap points.”
The groups also said they were moved to intervene in the matter following a media report that the management of FUOYE has been “operating with an anti-Ekiti agenda and that the school’s authorities have been replacing Ekiti workers with others from Ogun state, said to be the home state of Kayode Soremekun, the university vice chancellor”.
COAED also described as false, the reported removal of Daniel Adeyemo, the school’s registrar.
“Our investigation revealed that Mr. Daniel Adeyemo, has not been removed from office as claimed in the said newspaper report,’’ Oguntomole said.
“Mr. Adeyemo is on his accumulated annual leave from the university; as he had not gone on his annual leave since 2011. We also verified that Mr. Adeyemo continues to enjoy all the entitlements of the office of a registrar till date, including his salary, official car with a driver and others.”
