It was a case of double loss for Rotimi Obamuwagun on Friday as he lost his bid to become the president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) — only to be told of his wife’s death moments later.
Obamuwagun was defeated to the position by 21 votes as Abdulwaheed Odusile was elected to succeed Garba Mohammed, who had served two terms as NUJ president.
Obamuwagun’s wife died on Friday evening as the election went under way, but the news was kept from him until the results were announced early Saturday morning.
TheCable could not confirm the cause of the death.
Richard Akinnola, respected journalist and friend to Obamuwagun, confirmed the report to TheCable on phone.
Odusile polled 354 votes Obamuwagun scored 333 votes.
