Drama as OAU students, staff ‘force’ judge to reverse ruling on ex-VC

Drama as OAU students, staff ‘force’ judge to reverse ruling on ex-VC
July 11

David Oladimeji, a judge in Osun state, has reversed his judgement concerning the detention of Anthony Elujoba, former vice chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

Earlier on Tuesday, Oladimeji ruled that Elujoba be remanded at the Ilesha Prison until July 19, fixed for his bail hearing.

As a result of his ruling, the staff and students of the university staged a protest at the court, demanding a reversal of the ruling.

“Why such a long day for a ruling that could have been possibly delivered tomorrow or worse later this week? And why remand him in Ilesha prison and not EFCC custody as it was last week,” a witness said.

“The unions in the school and many students insisted the former VC will go nowhere until the judge revisits his ruling.

“The agitators barricaded everywhere and blocked all roads to court and into Ede town. The police came in different contingent but couldn’t change anything. Everywhere was blocked and even the judge himself was holed up in his office. EFCC vehicles were tampered with and all tires of their vehicles and several other vehicles deflated.”

“After about 30 minutes of demonstration, the judge called the prosecuting and defence counsel into his chambers, where he adjusted his ruling.”

He held that the date for the bail application will now be Friday, July 15, 2017, while Elujoba will be remanded in EFCC custody as against Ilesha prison.

This was to the delight of the workers who vacated the protest grounds and lifted the exit and entry blockade of the court.
