The police on Friday averted a clash between two groups – Pro-Buhari protesters and ‘Our Mumu Don Do’ which converged on the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

A coalition of civil society groups led by ‘Our Mumu Don Do’, Charly Boy’s group,  hit the streets on Monday to demand that President Muhammadu Buhari either resume office or resign.

Buhari has been in the UK where he is receiving medical attention since May 7.

The Charly Boy group arrived at the Unity Fountain on Friday to hold its daily sit-in. But a few minutes after it had converged, the other group arrived at the venue and made a move at it. Policemen on the ground then intervened to forestall any brawl.

The anti-Buhari protesters left afterwards without an incident.

On Tuesday, the protesters demanding the return or resignation of the president were teargassed. Charly Boy, who was among the protesters, collapsed after inhaling the asphyxiating gas.

The police later said they had to use force on the protesters because hoodlums infiltrated their ranks.

The police also described the collapse of the most prominent figure of the protest as “over dramatisation“.
