A policeman killed three people and himself at a hotel in Ketu, Lagos state, on Saturday, apparently under the influence of alcohol.

The policeman, who was said to be “providing security” for the hotel on Anibaba street, Ketu, Lagos was said to have engaged his victims with his rifle out of “malignant heart”.

A resident who confirmed the incident to TheCable said this was not the first time the police were “misbehaving” in the region.

“I was not surprised when I heard of the death, the policemen around here have been misbehaving of late,” he said.

“In fact, I heard this was done under the influence of alcohol – apparently, the police had a malignant heart.”

Another resident who spoke to TheCable by phone said the event had always been in the offing, so it definitely is no surprise to us here.

“I can’t confirm this particular case. But I know policemen have been acting weird of late,” she said.

“At the vigil mass, St Micheals ordered for some policemen for security reasons, when they came around 10pm, they were already drunk and were seriously misbehaving.

“Same last night, there was traffic around our street, they were having a party, so the road was blocked, a policeman proving security for one of the hotels started directing traffic and telling people to move to spaces that a car could not fit.

“He was just doing nonsense, it took some time before people noticed he was drunk.”

Joe Offor, police public relation officer (PPRO) for Lagos state, in a series of text messages, told TheCable that “the policeman was fed with alcohol while on duty”.

Offor promised that the force would look into the case and take necessary actions going forward.
