D'Tigress of Nigeria
The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has lined up D’Tigress, the national women’s team, for a three-nation tournament in Abuja from July 18 to 20.
In a statement, the federation said the tournament, which would have Togo and Kenya participating, is designed to prepare D’Tigress for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championship, which is billed for July 24 to August 3 in Côte d’Ivoire.
It would be the first time D’Tigress will play in Nigeria after winning four back-to-back Afrobasket championships.
The NBBF said that during the exhibition tournament, the players would run women’s empowerment programmes and hold basketball camps for up-and-coming stars in the federal capital.

Ugo Udezue, Chairman of the NBBF’s Sponsorship Committee, said on Saturday that the federation had planned to create a fun atmosphere for the Nigerian fans to interact with D’Tigress.
Over the years, D’Tigress have consistently proven to be the best team on the continent, winning four consecutive AfroBasket titles — 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023 — and making history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by becoming the first African team to reach the quarterfinals after defeating top-ranked teams like Canada and Australia.
Rena Wakama, the team’s head coach, became the first female manager to win the Afrobasket title and was named the best trainer at the Paris Olympics.
