There is confusion over the willingness of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay match bonus to the Super Eagles of Nigeria for Saturday’s dead rubber against Tanzania.
The game, which holds by 4pm at the Uyo township stadium, is the last qualification encounter for the 2017 African Cup of Nations, but both Nigeria and Tanzania will be missing at the tournament, having failed to qualify, with Egypt leading the group to qualify automatically.
A top official of the federation told TheCable, without wanting to be named, that the federation would not pay match bonuses.
“The NFF will not pay bonuses for the game against Tanzania,” he said.
“We have an understanding with the players. We made the players realise they have money challenges and will only be refunding the players return tickets.”
However, Mohammed Sanusi, secretary-general of NFF, described as a “distraction” insinuation that the Super Eagles would not be paid bonuses for the game against the Taifa Stars,
”Where did you hear that from? There’s no truth in that,” Sanusi said when asked to confirm that the Eagles would receive no bonus.
“It is just the handiwork of enemies of distraction. The team will get bonus after the game.”
The Super Eagles used to receive a winning bonus of $10,000 but it was reduced to $5,000 after the 2014 World Cup.
