Ebola: FG postpones resumption date of schools

The federal government has postponed the resumption date of primary and secondary schools from September 15 to October 13 in order to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus disease.

Addressing some teachers on Tuesday after a meeting with the commissioners of education across the 36 states in the country, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, minister of education, said the government  is putting in place adequate measures to check the spread of the highly contagious disease.

“All primary and secondary schools in private and public sectors are to remain closed until Monday, October 13,” he said.

“This is to ensure that adequate preventive measures are put in place before students resume.”

Though Ebola has claimed about five lives in Nigeria, the government has been commended for its handling of the outbreak.

Ebola was first discovered in a river in Congo in 1976 but became a big threat in West Africa after an outbreak in Guinea in February.

The disease has claimed over 1, 500 lives in 2014 alone.
