Ebola: FG postpones resumption date of schools

Ebola: FG postpones resumption date of schools

22:49 2014

The federal government has postponed the resumption date of primary and secondary schools from September 15 to October 13 in order to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus disease.

Addressing some teachers on Tuesday after a meeting with the commissioners of education across the 36 states in the country, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, minister of education, said the government  is putting in place adequate measures to check the spread of the highly contagious disease.

“All primary and secondary schools in private and public sectors are to remain closed until Monday, October 13,” he said.

“This is to ensure that adequate preventive measures are put in place before students resume.”

Though Ebola has claimed about five lives in Nigeria, the government has been commended for its handling of the outbreak.

Ebola was first discovered in a river in Congo in 1976 but became a big threat in West Africa after an outbreak in Guinea in February.

The disease has claimed over 1, 500 lives in 2014 alone.

If the spread of Ebola has been contained as claimed by the Minister of Health, why postponement of resumption date of schools?

So are you insinuating this confirms your suspicion that Ebola has not been contained? Drawing inference from two different people’s POV doesn’t confirm anything Tony. Haven’t you heard of “Prevention is better than cure”. Even if they do not postpone resumption date, I have already said my kids won’t show up in school until mid-October.

What is sacrosanct about mid-October? May be a curfew should be decleared since “prevention is better than cure”

Atleast, I’ve given myself a month to observe and be well educated on what Ebola really is and protect my family from it, than different news flying around. What have you given yourself?
