EFCC probe of Tambuwal politically motivated, says Sokoto PDP

Aminu Tambuwal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto says the investigation of Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of the state, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is “politically motivated”.

Tambuwal, who represents Sokoto south in the senate, was quizzed by the EFCC on Monday.

The former governor was said to have made cash withdrawals of N189 billion in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Hassan Sanyinnawal, PDP publicity secretary in Sokoto, said Tambuwal’s probe has political undertone.

“The so-called investigation is nothing more than a fishing expedition, revived from an old phantom case that has failed to produce evidence in the past,” the statement reads.

“It is the handiwork of political actors in Sokoto and Abuja who are desperate to smear Tambuwal’s enviable image and force him to abandon his stand against misrule.”

Sanyinnawal asked the anti-graft agency to stop alleged selective prosecution and pursue “genuine corruption cases”.

“Our trust in Tambuwal’s integrity cannot be shaken by politically motivated probes,” Sanyinnawal said.

“We will not be daunted by the repressive schemes of reactionary forces, no matter how highly placed.”

Tambuwal was governor of Sokoto from 2015 to 2023 and speaker of the house of representatives from 2011 to 2015.
