Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), has described Jacob Daniel, a late inspector, who was killed in an incident in Adamawa, as an “excellent police officer”.

Egbetokun spoke on Tuesday when visited the Adamawa police command to sympathise with officers of the command over the death of the inspector.

On November 21,  Daniel was killed after some soldiers attacked the headquarters of the police command in Yola north LGA of Adamawa.

According to Afolabi Babatola, commissioner of police in Adamawa, the officer died during a gun duel between the two sets of security operatives.

Babatola said a group of soldiers had stormed the police facility over a “conflict” with some officers at the Target Junction in Yola north LGA.

However, Gambo Mohammed, commander of Brigade 23 in Yola, said the crisis began after a military personnel was shot in the leg by a police officer on patrol.

Speaking during the visit, the IGP said the force headquarters would support the family of the late inspector of police.

He added that measures would be taken to ensure that such an incident never occurs again and called on police officers in the state not to be demoralised.

The police chief urged them to go about with their normal joint operations with the army and other security agencies in the interest of the country.

“I am in your midst today to share the grief that you have; I was told Inspector Jacob was an excellent officer who was committed to his duty and trusted by both his subordinate and his superior,” NAN quoted Egbetokun as saying.

“I have come to tell you that together we are going to change the policing narrative of this country.”

Speaking also, Afolabi Babalola, Adamawa commissioner of police, said the incident was “a big dent” to the peace of the state.

He said the command has made “serious efforts” in taming the activities of criminal gangs in the state.

He urged the IGP to deploy armoured personnel carriers (APC), gun trucks and Hilux vehicles to enhance the efforts of the command in ensuring peace and security across the state.

“The Nigeria police force, being the lead agency in internal security, has played its part in making sure that the state is safe, secured and conducive for both economic and social activities,” Babalola said.
