Eight suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly been killed by security agents in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

The insurgents, who were said to have arrived the state capital on motorcycles and one gun truck, entered through a cashew plantation behind a major barracks in the city.

Muslim faithful were preparing to break their Ramadan fast when they started hearing sporadic gunshots.

The insurgents were said to have prepared to set buildings ablaze around the Jidari Polo area, when a combined team of operatives of the police and army engaged the attackers and repelled the attack.

“On sighting our armoured personnel carrier (APC), the terrorists started running away,” a police source told TheCable.

“We chased them and overran them with our APC, while some of them were instantly killed.

“We counted at least eight dead bodies, while many others were scattered to pieces. As we speak, their bodies are still in Jidari Polo. It was actually a bad outing for the terrorists.

“Items recovered from the terrorists include; anti air craft guns, several AK-47s and one gun truck.”

A reinforcement team comprising the army, police and the civilian joint task force (CJTF), TheCable understands, was later deployed to go after the fleeing terrorists.
