Eight killed in fresh Cholera outbreak in Kano

At least eight people have been killed and 20 in the hospital following a fresh cholera outbreak in Gwarzo local government area (LGA) of Kano state.

This happened barely one week after 11 persons died of Cholera in Bebeji local government area of the state.

Ibrahim Sale, a resident, said apart from six deaths recorded in about four villages, his neighbour’s 5-year-old daughter, Khadija, died on Thursday afternoon after receiving over 10 drips following symptoms of stooling and vomiting.

Speaking on the recent deaths, Bashir Kutama, Gwarzo LGA chairman, and Shehu Kabiru Bayero, district head of Gwarzo,  said the council had procured medicine to support patients suspected to have been infected by the disease.

When TheCable visited the General Hospital in Gwarzo, Mariam Yusuf, mother of Zainab, a 4-year-old child, who has been in hospital for over three days, said her daughter apart from vomiting and stooling is also running temperature and has received about 15 drips.

“Since she was hospitalized, there has been little improvement. Honestly I am scared; I pray my daughter will survive it,” she said.

Health personnel at the hospital refused to speak with journalists, saying they were not authorized to do so.

Efforts to reach Kabiru Getso, the state commissioner for health and Ismaila Gwammaja, the ministry spokesperson were not successful as of the time of filing this report.
