Ekiti assembly threatens to sue Magu over arrest of state officials

The Ekiti state house of assembly has threatened to initiate contempt proceedings against Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over the arrest of two top government officials in the state.

Last week, the EFCC arrested Toyin Ojo and Yemi Owolabi,  the state’s commissioner for finance and accountant general, respectively.

They were arrested following “their refusal to honour previous invitations for interrogation in relation to pending investigation on the misuse of bailout funds by the Ayodele Fayose administration”.

In a letter to Magu, they argued that the arrest of the duo was against court orders.

They described it as “premeditated, malicious, contemptuous and unconstitutional in all ramifications”.

The lawmakers also said the arrest “smacked of gangsterism by an agency that derives its power from the constitution but acts in clear contempt of the rule of law”.

“We, therefore, wish to put you on notice that should you fail to desist from further disobedience to the court order mentioned above by continuous infraction against the people and the government of Ekiti state, contempt proceeding will be initiated against you without delay,” read the letter signed by Kolawole Oluwawole, speaker of the assembly.
