Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, says he does not plan to run for office in the 2027 elections.

El-Rufai spoke on Wednesday in Kaduna while welcoming defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

El-Rufai said he intended to withdraw from party politics after leaving office in 2023, adding that recent events in governance made him reconsider his stance.

“I am not contesting for anything. I don’t want to go to the senate. I am not contesting for any position,” el-Rufai said.

“That’s why I am calling on you, let us join hands and ensure we remove the oppressors.

“When I finished my tenure as governor, I intended to rest. But given how things have turned out, we must play our part to bring about better leadership. That is why we are back in politics.”

He called on youths in Kaduna and beyond to seize the opportunity of the ongoing voter registration, stressing that their involvement is vital to reshaping the nation’s politics.

“In Lagos and Osun, at least 600,000 people registered. But in Kaduna, only 60,000. Anyone who is 18 years old should go and register, even with their phone. Registration gives you the right to choose who governs you,” he said.

Since his exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in March, the former governor has been actively campaigning against his former party.

Early this month, el-Rufai said Nigeria’s survival is at risk if the APC wins the 2027 presidential election.

El-Rufai said he is ready to mobilise Nigerians to eject the “incompetent” ruling party.
