Umar Namadi, governor of Jigawa, has advised politicians in the state to tackle poverty and unemployment through youth empowerment.

The governor spoke on Monday during a government and public engagement programme locally known as Gwamnatin Da Jama’a held in Ringim LGA.

The programme is a platform for the government to share information about ongoing projects and efforts to enhance residents’ lives.

Namadi said tackling poverty is vital for driving economic growth and creating jobs in Jigawa, adding that skills development and a supportive business are essential for long-term growth.

Auwal Sankara, commissioner for humanitarian and special duties, distributed N50 million in empowerment funds to 250 youths and women, giving each beneficiary N250,000.

Sankara said the cash will help the beneficiaries to grow their businesses and enable others to start new ventures.

The commissioner, who hails from Ringim, pledged to continue supporting the governor’s 12-point agenda to foster prosperity and development in Jigawa.

Namadi praised the commissioner for the empowerment initiative, emphasising that tackling poverty is crucial for boosting economic growth and creating jobs.

The governor urged elected officials, political leaders, and business executives to support and empower youths to tackle poverty.

In April, Namadi opposed the call by Theophilus Danjuma, former defence minister, for Nigerians to resort to self-defence.

Namadi warned that allowing Nigerians to bear arms in defence would lead to anarchy.
