Enrique Tarrio, former leader of the Proud Boys, has been jailed for 22 years for orchestrating the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.

Although Tarrio was not in Washington during the riot, he helped organise the attack.

The sentence is the longest handed so far to a ringleader over the attack. Over 1,100 people have been arrested in relation to the riot.

The protesters had turned out in support of then-President Donald Trump, who still alleges to have won the 2020 US presidential election.

In May, Tarrio was convicted of seditious conspiracy, a US civil war-era charge, and other counts.

Before his sentencing on Tuesday, the 39-year-old apologised for his role in the riot.

“I am extremely ashamed and disappointed that they were caused grief and suffering,” he said.

“I will have to live with that shame for the rest of my life.

“I was my own worst enemy. My hubris convinced me that I was a victim and targeted unfairly.”

He said Trump had lost the election, adding that he did not intend to manipulate the outcome of the vote.

“I am not a political zealot,” Tarrio said.

“Inflicting harm or changing the results of the election was not my goal. I didn’t think it was even possible to change the results of the election.

“Please show me mercy. I ask you that you not take my 40s from me.”

Trump who is eyeing a return to the White House, has promised to pardon most or all of the rioters if he is re-elected president in 2024.
