Mira Mehta, founder of Tomato Jos, a Nigerian agric company, has tackled the All Progressives Congress (APC) support group for using her business for clout on Twitter.

APC support with one million followers had made a post on Twitter about Tomato Jos’ newly built processing factory, including four pictures of the factory.

“This newly built Tomato Jos processing factory in Kaduna begins first production, 1 year after the N4bn plant began. Farmers who used to discard their excess yields during gluts in the north west will now have a steady demand for their produce to make paste,” the post read.

Responding in a tweet, Mehta described the post as false information and asked that the post be taken down and her company not be used for a political agenda.

“This is false information. I am the owner of this factory, which is a private initiative. Please take down this tweet and do not use my company for any political agenda,” she said.

In another tweet, Mehta said though the plant is newly built, the amount stated for the building of the plant is higher than the actual amount spent.

“The newly built and production run parts are true, but we did not spend as much as they quoted and I’d really rather not have my many years off hard work be used for clout in an election cycle,” she said.

The post garnered many comments with users saying the tweet was made to appear like it was an APC sponsored initiative and called for it to be taken down.

Although the APC handle did not respond to Mehta’s comments, it later deleted the tweet.

In 2020, the company raised €3.9 million funding for its irrigation and tomato processing plant which is planned to produce 24 tons of finished product per day.

The company, which is based in Kaduna, works with smallholder farmers to increase yield, reduce losses after harvest, and get optimum profit from sales to customers.
