The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced the criteria for the selection of athletes to next month’s World Athletics Championships, which will be held in Tokyo, Japan.
In a statement on Sunday, Israel Inwang, the secretary-general of AFN, said only athletes who have qualified by attaining the World Athletics (WA) entry standard for each event and those who finish within one to 20 in the ranking quota will be selected for the World Championships.
WA entry standard is the minimum performance yardstick that athletes must meet to qualify and participate in a particular track and field event. Athletes can also qualify for World Athletics event through the ranking of their performance throughout a calendar year before the stated competition.
Inwang added that athletes still have until August 24, 2025, to either qualify by entry standard or world ranking, after which Team Nigeria’s list for the Tokyo 2025 will be published.

The AFN secretary-general said the selection criteria, which take immediate effect, would ensure that only committed athletes represent Nigeria at international competitions.
He then charges all stakeholders to ensure full compliance with the directives and that the AFN remains committed to supporting dedicated athletes who
demonstrate both athletic excellence and professional conduct.
Inwang said AFN remains committed to maintaining high standards of professionalism and discipline in Nigerian athletics.

The 2025 World Athletics Championships will be held between September 13 and 25.
