EPL: Calafiori’s header hands Arsenal slim victory over dominant Man United

Ricardo Calafiori’s first-half strike was the difference as Arsenal nicked a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in their English Premier League (EPL) at Old Trafford on Sunday.

‎The Italian defender’s goal, courtesy of a goalkeeping error, and David Raya’s masterclass at the other end, handed Arsenal a smash-and-grab win against Ruben Amorim’s dominant side in the pulsating encounter.

Both sides handed debuts to new signings, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha for the hosts, while Arsenal started Martin Zubimendi and striker Victor Gyokores.

Man United endured their worst EPL campaign last season — finished in 15th place — but looked better in the opening exchanges in which they limited Arsenal.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead on 13 minutes through Ricardo Calafiori. The defender nodded in from a yard out after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir flapped at a corner kick, allowing the Italian defender an easy finish.

‎Cunha and Mbeumo went close on several occasions in the first, but Raya denied both debut goals before the interval.

‎The Spanish goalkeeper produced further saves in the second period, pushing out Mbeumo’s header to maintain the Gunners’ lead.

Man United continued to push for an equaliser, but Mikel Arteta’s defence stood resolute to claim all three points.

The Gunners have defeated the Red Devils on two opening days.

Arsenal remain unbeaten away from home in the EPL since November 2014, a run of 15 consecutive matches.

‎In earlier matches, Ola Aina, Super Eagles defender, played all 90 minutes in Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 win over Brentford. Taiwo Awoniyi, his compatriot, was an unused substitute. Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge by resolute Crystal Palace, who had a goal ruled out by VAR, in their opening match of the season at Stamford Bridge.

‎RESULTS
‎Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace
‎Nottingham Forest 3-1 Brentford
‎Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal
