EPL results: Drama, red cards as Man United struggle to beat Chelsea at Old Trafford

Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-1 in a wild Premier League clash at Old Trafford, with both sides going down to 10

Manchester United scored twice in the first half to defeat Chelsea 2-1 in their English Premier League (EPL) match at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The feisty encounter saw both sides reduced to ten men in the first half, with Man United capitalizing better than Chelsea.

Ruben Amorim’s side scored twice through Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, before Nathaniel Chalobah responded for Chelsea late in the match.

Chelsea got off to a bad start when goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez was sent off in the fifth minute for bringing down Bryan Mbeumo outside the box, and Man United capitalised through Fernandes who guided Patrick Dorgu’s cross into the net, handing the hosts a 1-0 lead with his 100th goal on his 200th appearance for the club.

Casemiro made it 2-0 with a header at the back post, before the veteran Brazilian midfielder was sent off after two bookings for clumsy challenges.

Chealsea improved in the second half, and their pressure paid off when Chalobah met Reece James’ cross with a cushioned header into the far corner for 2-1 ten minutes to the end.

The Blues could not steal a point despite the valiant effort, as Man United sealed all three points to claim consecutive home wins for the fist time since December 2023.

Ruben Amorim’s side sealed only their second win of the season, and improved to ninth position with seven points, one point behind sixth-place Chelsea.

In other matches, Liverpool continued their perfect season following a 2-1 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby that ensured the EPL champions have won all five matches played so far.

It was however a bad day at the office for Tolu Arokodare, Nigerian striker, who fired blanks on his second start for Wolverhampton Wanderers who fell to a fifth defeat in as many matches, losing 3-1 at home to promoted Leeds United.
