Ao Tanaka scored deep into added time to steal a point for Leeds United in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Elland Road on Saturday.

The six-goal English Premier League (EPL) encounter saw a struggling but recently improved Leeds United put in a fearless encounter against the visitors who paraded their leaky defence and left Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak on the bench as Hugo Ekitike led the line.

Ekitike, the French striker, scored a brace, while Dominik Szobozlai thought he had sealed a three points for Liverpool, but Leeds recovered on both occasions, cancelling the two-goal advantage through Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Anton Stach, before Tanaka broke Liverpool hearts six minutes into added time.

The match came alive in the second half when Ekitike scored twice to put Liverpool ahead. He intercepted a pass and waltzed past a couple of defenders before burying a shot into the net for 1-0 on 48 minutes, then converted a cross two minutes later for 2-0.

Leeds who defeated Chelsea in midweek, however, staged a spirited comeback in similar fashion to their visitors, scoring two goals in two minutes. Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a penalty kick awarded for a foul by Ibrahima Konate on 73 minutes, before Stach levelled with a well-taken shot that sent Alisson Becker, Liverpool goalkeeper, the wrong way for 2-2.

Szoboszlai thought he had netted the matchwinner with Liverpool’s third goal ten minutes from time, controlling Ryan Gravenberch’s pass before clotting into the bottom corner to silence the Elland Road crowd.

Tanaka would restore the home crowd’s voice with jubilations, as the Japanese international volleyed a corner kick delivery into the net from close range at the far post.
