Harvey Barnes scored a brace as Newcastle United defeated Manchester City 2-1 in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at St. James’ Park stadium on Saturday.

The Geordies upstaged City in a feisty encounter that produced all three goals in the second half despite numerous chances for both sides in the first half.

Barnes turned out to be the home side’s hero, despite a leveller from Ruben Dias in a match where Erling Haaland was kept quiet.

Newcastle United have endured a below-par domestic campaign and should have taken the lead through Nick Woltemade, who saw two clear-cut chances saved by Ederson, while Barnes inexplicably missed an open goal at the far post. Phil Foden also failed to find the bottom corner for City in an end-to-end first half.

The breakthrough came in the second half when Bruno Guimaraes charged forward following an exchange of passes before finding Barnes, who planted a well-struck shot beyond Ederson into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 in the 63rd minute.

The lead lasted just five minutes as the visitors poured forward for an equalizer that eventually arrived through defender Dias, whose low shot squeezed through a crowd of players and past a stranded goalkeeper.

A determined Newcastle responded with the winner two minutes later, Barnes prodding home after Guimaraes’ header hit the bar and fell to him four yards out.

Man City could not mount a late comeback as Newcastle hung on for a first league win in three matches. It is also a first win for Eddie Howe over Pep Guardiola’s Man City in 17 matches, and the defeat leaves the Citizens in third place.

Earlier, Liverpool succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at Anfield to Nottingham Forest and dropped down to 11th place.

The Reds succumbed to a sixth defeat in seven league matches, with goals from Murillo, Nicolò Dominguez, and Morgan Gibbs-White sealing the win.

Chelsea, however, climbed to second place with a 2-0 victory at Burnley, while the duo of Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi, Super Eagles of Nigeria internationals, were starters in Fulham’s one-goal victory.
