EPL round-up: Chelsea secure much-needed win as Everton hold Man United
Chelsea scored two goals in the final six minutes to overcome 10-man Southampton 3-1 at the Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Trevor Chalobah, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell were on the scoresheet as Chelsea returned to winning ways following last weekend’s loss to Manchester City, and midweek defeat at Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.
Chelsea took a ninth-minute lead through Chalobah’s header, and despite their continued dominance, the Blues’ had a goal disallowed as they took a one-goal lead into the interval.
James Ward-Prowse scored from the penalty spot to level early in the second period following a foul by Chilwell on Southampton’s Tino Livramento.
Ward-Prowse became the villain with a dismissal following a late tackle on Jorginho, with Martin Atkinson, the centre referee, showing him a straight red card after a VAR review.
Thomas Tuchel’s side leveraged on their numerical advantage to take the lead on 84 minutes as Werner swept in Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross before Chilwell volleyed in from inside the area five minutes later to seal victory.
Thomas Tuchel’s side return to the top of the EPL table with 16 points from seven matches, two ahead of Liverpool who have a game more.
Manchester United were however held to a 1-1 draw by Everton. Anthony Martial’s first half goal was cancelled by Andy Townsend in the second period as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team failed to win in consecutive league matches this season.
RESULTS
Manchester United 1-1 Everton
Chelsea 3-1 Southampton
