EPL round-up: Haaland brace earns derby win for City as Liverpool maintain perfect start

Erling Haaland scored a brace as Manchester City secured a 3-0 win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Norwegian striker, who scored five goals in midweek for Norway, continued his rich goalscoring form against their struggling neighbours, who could not make the most of their openings in the encounter.

Manchester United started the better side, and Gianluigi Donnarumma, Man City’s new goalkeeper, was called into action early on to save Benjamin Sesko’s shot.

That was the best from Man United as City took over the encounter, with Phil Foden nodding beyond the goalkeeper from Jeremy Doku’s cross for 1-0.

Haaland finished off a well-worked team goal to make it 2-0 on his 150th appearance for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The Norwegian hit the woodwork early in the second half, but he did not miss on 68 minutes when sent through on goal by Bernardo Silva, tucking away the chance to seal the 3-0 win.

The win ended a run of two consecutive defeats for Man City, who moved up to eighth position with six points.

Man United have won just twice in their last EPL 12 matches, and once in four this season, with the under-pressure Ruben Amorim’s side sliding to 14th position.

Earlier in the day, Liverpool needed a last-gasp Mohamed Salah penalty kick to overcome Burnley 1-0.

The defending EPL champions maintained their perfect start and returned to the top of the league with 12 points after four matches.
