Leicester City have been relegated from the English Premier League (EPL) despite a 2-0 win against West Ham United in their final league match at the King Power stadium on Sunday.
Leicester, home to the Super Eagles duo of Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, suffered the pain of relegation alongside Leeds United, whose EPL status also ended on Sunday.
Goals from Harvey Barnes and Wout Faes were not enough to save Leicester, former EPL champions, due to Everton’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth at Goodison Park that confirmed the Toffees’ EPL status.
The result means Leicester finished the season with 34 points, two less than Everton, and brought to an end their eight-year EPL stay.
Both Leicester and Leeds join basement club Southampton whose status as a Championship side next season was confirmed a few weeks earlier.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa claimed the final European spot with a 2-1 victory over Brighton, ending Tottenham’s European dreams despite the Lillywhites’ 4-1 win at Leeds.
Manchester United prepared for their FA Cup final with a 2-1 win over Fulham while champions Man City, their opponents, lost 1-0 at Brentford.
