Liverpool improved their chances of a potential top-four finish following a 1-0 win over Brentford at Anfield in their English Premier League (EPL) fixture on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the game in the first half of a game Liverpool should have blown Brentford away, while the away side was also denied by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Salah gave Liverpool the lead in the 12th minute with his 100th goal at Anfield, the club’s stadium. The Egyptian striker bundled home Virgil van Dijk’s knockdown to give Jurgen Klopp’s side a lead they held onto till the end.

The goal also means Salah is the first Liverpool striker to score in nine successive league games at Anfield.

Bryan Mbueno thought he had equalised for Brentford when he rounded the goalkeeper and tucked into an empty net but was denied by the offside flag and VAR.

There were chances for Cody Gapko and Darwin Nunez, while Ivan Toney also went close for Brentford.

Liverpool move to fifth place on the EPL log with 62 points from 35 matches, one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United who have played two games less than the Anfield giants.

Elsewhere, Manchester City tightened their grip on the top spot following a 2-1 win over Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium.

Ilkay Gundogan’s brace was enough to extend their lead over Arsenal to four points despite Rodrigo’s late strike for Sam Allardyce’s relegation-threatened Leeds.

Chelsea also won their first match under Frank Lampard’s interim reign, courtesy of a 3-1 win at Bournemouth. Connor Gallagher, Bennett Badiashile, and Joao Felix were on strike as the Blues stemmed a run of four straight defeats.
