The police on Wednesday said that Ese Oruru, the 14-year-old girl allegedly abducted by one Yunusa Dahiru in Bayelsa state and taken to Kano state where she was converted to Islam, would be reunited with her parents after medical evaluation.

Briefing journalists on the matter at the police headquarters in Abuja, Olabisi Kolawole, police spokeswoman, said the minor was in the custody of the gender and child protection unit of the force which was giving her psychological and emotional support.

“Following the prompt intervention of the inspector-general of police (IGP), I am delighted to confirm that the police have today secured the release of Ese Oruru,” the girl-child victim from Kano state Sharia commission,” she said.

“She is currently in safe custody of officers of the gender unit of the force. I can also confirm that the force has also taken into custody Yunusa Dahiru (alias Yello), her abductor.

“The victim is currently being granted psychological and emotional support by officers of the gender and child protection unit of the force, which handles cases of this nature that touch on violence against children.

“Upon certifying her medical status and emotional state, Ese Oruru will be reunited with her parents who are already around to work with police professionals in this regard.”

Rose Oruru, Ese’s mother, who was present at the briefing, wore a tired look.

Speaking in pidgin English, she thanked the press and the police for their efforts in rescuing her daughter, saying that she was ready to take her home.

On Tuesday, Ese was brought to the police headquarters a few minutes before 1pm.

She was covered in a hijab, and was escorted into an office at the seventh floor of the police building.

She looked firm without a smile on her face.
