Everton’s sanction for breaking EPL financial rules reduced to 6 points

Everton’s sanction for breaking EPL financial rules reduced to 6 points

Everton’s sanction for breaching English Premier League (EPL) financial rules has been reduced from 10 points to six.

In November 2023, the club was handed a 10-point deduction penalty for breaching the league’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSRs).

An independent commission found that Everton had run at a loss by spending almost £20 million more than the threshold set by the EPL, with the penalty handed out after five days of deliberation.

The club also admitted to the commission that “it was in breach of the PSRs for the period ending Season 2021/22, but the extent of the breach remained in dispute”.

The sanction became effective immediately and dumped Everton into the relegation battle.

Despite the admittance, the club appealed the ruling.

In a statement on its website on Monday, EPL announced the reduction in action by an Appeal Board comprising Sir Gary Hickinbottom (Chair), Daniel Alexander KC and Katherine Apps KC.

“Two of those nine grounds were upheld by the Appeal Board, which has substituted the original points deduction of 10 for six,” the statement reads.

“This revised sanction has immediate effect, and the Premier League table will be updated today to reflect this.”

The reduction in the penalty takes the Toffees from 17th to 15th.
