Ex-FERMA MD beats serving senator to APC ticket in Katsina

Umar Kurfi, senator representing Katsina central, on Thursday lost his re-election ticket at the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary in the state.

Kurfi, who polled 141 votes, lost the election to Kabir Barkiya, former managing director of Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

Barkiya polled 1466 votes to beat  Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, younger brother to late former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Ibrahim Idah, a former senator.

Yar’Adu and Idah polled 913 and  897 votes respectively.

Isha Adamu, the electoral committee chairman, who announced the results, said Barkiya met all the set conditions and consequently declared him winner.

“Today after voting for Katsina Central senatorial district to determine the candidate of the APC, the aspirants scored the following votes: Senator Ibrahim Umar Kurfi scored 141 votes,”Adamu said.

“Senator Ibrahim Idah scored 897 votes, while Abdulraziz Musa Yar’Adua scored 913 votes and Eng. Kabir Abdullahi Barkiya got 1,466 votes with 64 invalid votes.

“Having satisfied the conditions set by the guidelines for the conduct of this election by the APC National Working Committee. I have the honour to declare Eng. Kabir Abdullahi Barkiya as the senatorial candidate for Katsina central.”

Kurfi is the first senator to lose his re-election bid since the start of the party’s senatorial primaries.
