EXCLUSIVE: US marines in Abuja over insecurity

EXCLUSIVE: US marines in Abuja over insecurity
May 03
20:31 2014

US marines are in Nigeria to help the country’s security services tackle increasing threats, TheCable understands.

Nigeria is playing host to the 7th World Economic Forum Africa in Abuja next week amid heightened security challenges.

The summit is expected to be attended by over 10 heads of state and government as well as over 900 delegates from 70 countries.

Presidents of Algeria, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania and Togo have confirmed attendance.

Former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and former President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, are expected to attend.

Also, over 50 chief executives of big global corporations have confirmed attendance.

However, because of recent blasts in Nyanya – on the outskirts of Abuja –  there have been heightened fears of a possible terror attack during the summit.

Nigerian government has been assuring the world that it would provide maximum security, announcing a complete shut-down of schools and government offices during the summit.

TheCable reported on Tuesday that a 6,000-strong personnel, made up of soldiers and other security agents, will be deployed in Abuja – the heaviest security for a summit in Nigeria.

The US marines have already arrived the country, according to sources in the know of their movement.

“They are not going to be directly involved in the World Economic Forum event,” a senior American security source told TheCable. “Their brief is to train the Nigerian security services. It should be expected that Nigerian agents will handle the  security of the summit.”

The marines are highly specialised soldiers who have been deployed in areas affected by serious conflict and terrorism, such as Afghanistan and Iraq.

They are described in Wikipedia as “an amphibious, expeditionary, air-ground combined arms task force, capable of forcible entry from the air, land, and sea. It is capable of asymmetric warfare with conventional, irregular, and hybrid forces. While the Marine Corps does not employ any unique combat arms, as a force it can rapidly deploy a combined-arms task force to almost anywhere in the world within days.”

Meanwhile, TheCable has learnt that some of the extra security measures for the summit include:

  • Immediate deployment of the high security operation as against previous plans to deploy them from Tuesday
  • Expansion of secure zone perimeters at key locations (initially limited to 250 metres radius)
  • Additional security at venues, Abuja airport and key roads, as well as on dedicated shuttle services to and from the airport and between venues

Good news. I hope that the training of Nigerian security personnel to tackle insecurity would not just end after the forum? It should be a continuous exercise if we really want to combat Boko Haram

By this, the President had passed a vote of no confidence on the Nigerian armed forces who , normally, are supposed to be in charge.

Is vote of no confidence is not only on the Nigerian armed forces but also on himself. Now, Nigerians know that our so called "commander in Chief of the Armed Forces can not Command 'jack' He is as inexperienced and ineffective as his so armed forces.

It's high time FG probed the activities of past and present military chiefs on how they have been managing the huge appropriations received over this insecurity matters including Plateau crisis. FG should match appropriations with spendings and find out what is on ground. This is because the military has failed in its responsibilities, the equipment they used is obsolete despite the huge appropriations they got every year. These problems will not solved unless there is sincerity and commitment in the part of the military military. The service chiefs should be asked to step aside for more committed and loyal officers. That US military is coming it's a good report, they will be of great assistance. For us the citizens, let's continue to pray that God will show them where these terrorists are located, after all, Osama Bin Laden was captured after over 10 years of hiding.

Fake! All is Fake. This is a total business. Chibok girls abduction has to spark current all over the world to divert attention of the world on Biafrans cry. Now thousands have been killed by Buku haram especially Igbo traders in Kano, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba states, Igbos were deported from Lagos their own country, dying in Prison, deserts and high seas all over the world because of opportunities denied to them since after the civil war, yet no body was on the street for protest. This mission as I viewed it is only to stop Biafrans from their plans for secession. Who told you that Chibok abduction is not a business where parents have started demanding billions of Naira without confirming their daughters dead or lost..? Police has given N50 Million Naira while those who lost their loved ones in bombing are there crying for help. Is U.S not aware that all this catastrophe is because leadership has been mistakenly drove to south south Nigeria..? Not even a single idiot has been arrested for their treats to the Jonathan's government. Now you come to get Chibok girls, tomorrow is Gboko girls.. I will know your true mission in Nigeria… Those who cover the truth must face calamity from the most high. Northerners have told you they're made to rule Nigeria forever if not, then bloodshed, and you're there patching 1 Nigeria and living the masses in bondage. Rubbish all the way. Mr. Barrak Omaba if you're a true leader and you want the lives of Nigerian masses, go and read quran about instruction given to Muslims against those who call Jesus, which is the third person in 1 God. Why no body is embracing the truth in this world..? All the calamities happening to us for decades, where is CNN, where is BBC? why all these covering of truth, what have we done..? Do Cat and Rat ever live in the same room..? why no body wants to speak for us..? why..why….oh God whyyyy………

I just hope corruption will allow them learn and actually combat the security situation in this country. The reason for boko haram uprising in the first place is corruption.

There is too many corrupt people in the Nigerian government/governance. No truth in the media and security agents.

10 people will be killed for instance and they will reduce the number to anything they like. The discounted ones are the chicken?

Our rulers don't really care for our lives. I don't know if they want to build houses in the AIR with all the money they're siphoning away.

There goes our Sovereignty call me a conspiracy theorist but i heard through the grapevine that Boko Haram is a covert CIA operation set up by AFCOM to destabilize the country for American national interest objectives. Now that they are there, good luck trying to get them back out, next they will build a base if they don't have one already. That may be neither here nor there, but the fact still remains that Nigeria should be able to deal with this as a matter of regular law enforcement if the leadership was not so corrupt. BLACK people need to smarten up, we are a JOKE to the rest of the world. When will we come out the caves and be civilized. The man who wants to be re-elected president did not care that 300 plus children were abducted and Motor parks blowing up in the capital, so while the British high commissioner was giving blood, Mr Goodluck was partying with traditional leaders and the high and mighty. It had to take social media mobilization and international pressure to get him to act??……SHAME. My fellow Nigerians it is time to take OUR country back. We have to insist on another Option A4 type open elections and mobilize behind a citizens candidate, forget the political parties they are all crooks of the same ilk. If we don't demand the type of leadership and country we want to live in, we have only ourselves to blame.. Enough said.

U.S Marines? Did the 'famed' U.S Marines stop the bombings in Iraq and Afghanistan? If the U.S security system is so watertight why did 9/11 happen? Let's stop monkeying around, no nation can guarantee 100% security for its citizens not when you are fighting a faceless enemy.

Trust America. That is brain work. It took them years planning to come to Nigeria. They made it to look real under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Fix the World Economic Forum and make it coincide with insurgency period. You may not agree with my point for now, but history will tell.

For you to understand watch these movies 24, I.R.I.S, NIKITA, ALIAS AND NASTRADAMUS, THE MAN WHO SAW TOMORROW.
