The Forum of Governing Council Members of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria (FOGOCOM) has requested a review of the allowances and welfare packages for its external members, stating that the current rates are “grossly inadequate.”

Led by its national chairman Babajide Akin-Thomas, FOGOCOM addressed a letter to President Bola Tinubu dated July 30.

The forum appealed for a review of the sitting allowance, the introduction of a monthly allowance, and a welfare package to be paid at the end of their tenure.

The group said its members serve as the president’s direct representatives in their institutions, yet the conditions under which they work do not match their responsibilities.

FOGOCOM said its current sitting allowance ranges between N80,000 and N120,000 and is paid every three to four months.

The group noted that this rate was last reviewed in 2014 during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Since then, the country has experienced significant inflation, a rise in the cost of living, and drastic increases in the cost of transportation, accommodation, and other logistics,” the letter read.

“What was reasonable in 2014 has become grossly inadequate in 2025.”

The forum highlighted the personal sacrifices members make, including travelling long distances and spending multiple days away from home, which often costs more than the allowance they receive.

“When an individual incurs such expenses and receives N80,000–N120,000 once in 3–4 months, it not only fails to cover the costs but also discourages dedicated participation,” it stated.

FOGOCOM also proposed the introduction of a “reasonable monthly allowance” to support members’ ongoing duties between meetings, such as committee assignments and stakeholder engagement.

“Such a provision will improve morale, enhance dedication, and ensure we can discharge our duties effectively without financial strain,” the group said.

In addition to the sitting and monthly allowances, the forum asked for an end-of-tenure welfare package to be approved for members who have completed their statutory four-year term.

The group described the package as “something meaningful to go home with.”

FOGOCOM also called on all stakeholders to accord its members “full respect and recognition” as representatives of the president, urging Tinubu to issue a directive to ensure they are treated with the dignity and authority of their office.

“We are confident that with Mr. President’s listening ear and decisive leadership, these adjustments will not only improve our welfare but also strengthen the governance structure of tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the letter concluded.
