The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it will take action against the police orderly of Titi, wife of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

On Wednesday, the PDP presidential candidate posted on Twitter pictures of his wife at an event in Abuja.

“The S.H.E initiative by my wife, Hajia Titi Abubakar, entails concepts that are dear to me. Security, health and education. These three concepts define the scope of true freedom for any individual, especially the girl-child,” Atiku wrote.

One of the pictures showed a police officer carrying a handbag while Atiku’s wife was addressing the audience.

The development elicited reactions on social media as some netizens called the attention of police authorities to the incident.

Responding, Muyiwa Adejobi, force spokesperson, said it is not the duty of the officer to carry the handbag of Atiku’s wife.

“This is not acceptable. We have commenced necessary action on this. We will fish her out and get across to the principal,” Adejobi wrote.

“The AIG Special Protection Unit has been contacted to assist us get the woman police. Gradually, we will sanitise the system.”

Recently, the deployment of police officers as security aides to VIPs has generated criticism.

In September, the police arrested Zainab Duke-Abiola, a professor and human rights activist, for allegedly assaulting Teju Moses, a police inspector.

The police said Duke-Abiola assaulted the inspector over her refusal to carry out domestic chores.

Reacting to the incident, the Police Service Commission (PSC) said officers should be deployed to tackle insecurity instead of loitering around VIPs.
