The police have arrested Chris Elisha, a fake lawyer who practised for 15 years.

Trouble began when he stood in for one his clients at a magistrate court in Ojo, Lagos state.

He was said to have made an attempt to quote a section of the constitution in the bid to apply for the client’s bail but got it wrong.

This raised the suspicion of Nnamdi Nwafor, a lawyer, who challenged Elisha after the court session.

The confrontation drew the attention of court officials, lawyers and police officers at the court to the scene and the suspect was taken to the police station for interrogation.

Elisha, 49, claimed to have studied in Ukraine but said that he had not been called to the bar.

The suspect could also not produce any certificate from the university he claimed to have studied.

Chike Oti, spokesman of the Lagos police command, said the suspect claimed that he was into corporate law practice and did little of litigation.

“Chris Elisha has been practising as a lawyer for the past 15 years without being spotted,” Oti said in a statement.

“However, nemesis caught up with him on February 6, 2018, at the Ojo magistrate’s court where he appeared on behalf of an accused but found it difficult to move a motion for the variation of the bail condition of his client.”
