FAME Foundation to host inclusion tournament in Lagos ahead of International Day of PWDs

FAME Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), is set to host the 2025 edition of the HerSTEM inclusive tournament, a national parasports championship designed to celebrate and empower girls and women with disabilities across Nigeria.

The event is part of activities marking this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3.

In a statement issued on Monday, Aderonke Atoyebi, executive director of the FAME Foundation, said the tournament underscores the urgent need to build a country where people of all abilities can fully participate and thrive.

She said the competition will be held at the national stadium in Surulere, Lagos, and will feature 100 m finals for visually impaired athletes, athletes with cerebral palsy, and deaf athletes.

She added that there would also be discus throw for amputees and polio survivors and shot put for amputees and Lexul athletes.

Atoyebi said the 2025 theme, ‘Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress’, calls for societies that create space for everyone to reach their potential, adding that Nigeria’s development is tied to how well it includes its diverse population.

Atoyebi noted that many girls and women with disabilities still face systemic barriers in education, employment, and sports.

“Nigeria is inherently diverse. At FAME Foundation, we recognise the power of sports to unite people,” the statement reads.

“When individuals are shut out of sports, we deny them visibility, leadership, confidence, and the chance to show what they are capable of.”

She said the 2025 HerSTEM inclusive tournament will provide a national platform for athletes with disabilities to showcase their determination and talents.

Atoyebi urged government agencies, the private sector, development partners, and the media to expand resources for parasports and accessible sporting facilities while amplifying the abilities and achievements of people with disabilities.

Atoyebi expressed solidarity with the athletes preparing for the event, describing their perseverance as a catalyst for wider social change.
