Kayode Fayemi, governor of Ekiti, says implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage for workers will begin in the state this month.

He made this known during the celebration of 2019 World Teachers’ Day in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Saturday.

The governor said the decision was made to motivate workers, reward diligence and increase the standard of the state.

“We will commence payment of N30,000 to workers in Ekiti with effect from this month, October,” he said.

“We are determined to reward diligence because the workers, particularly our teachers have done the state proud.

“In this year’s WAEC, Ekiti was ranked 12th. I want to salute our teachers but that is not where Ekiti belonged, we must continually do more to rise to number one.”

Fayemi said his administration has approved the recruitment of 2,000 new teachers to enhance quality education in the state.

He said the state government has also established more schools in Ado Ekiti to reduce overcrowded classrooms and make learning more conducive.

The governor said his administration will enhance technical education and also ensure that basic education in the state goes in line with global best practices.

“I will promote functional and technical education in this state,” he said.

“I have also ensured that all students of school age are in schools in line with education law, which makes basic education compulsory and in line with global best practice.”
