Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti, says Biodun Oyebanji, the incumbent, will surpass his record in the state’s gubernatorial poll coming up in 2026.
In 2014, Fayose defeated Kayode Fayemi, the incumbent who was seeking re-election at the time, to win the Ekiti governorship election. Fayose polled 203,090 votes against Fayemi’s 120,433.
He secured victory in all 16 LGAs, with 57.9 percent of the total votes cast.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Fayose said Oyebanji would not only secure victory in all the LGAs in Ekiti but also in every ward.
He said the calibre of politicians who accompanied Oyebanji in submitting his nomination form should make it clear to anyone still harbouring false hopes that no one will defeat him in the election.
Fayose reiterated that he is not a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that he is a supporter of Oyebanji and President Bola Tinubu, with no apology for his stance.

“Governor Oyebanji, submitting his party nomination form in that manner yesterday, even though an overkill, has shown where Ekiti people are,” he said.
“By the power of God, he will not only be the one to beat my electoral record of winning in the 16 local government Areas in the state, but he will also win in the entire 177 wards.
“As he has been doing, governor Oyebanji should continue to focus on delivering good governance and dividends of democracy to the people of Ekiti till 2030.
“He should ignore those making noise about challenging. They are mere storms in a teacup.”

In July, Fayose endorsed Tinubu for a second term in 2027 and also backed Oyebanji’s re-election bid.
Fayose declared support for Tinubu and Oyebanji less than a week after he said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could place fourth in the 2027 general election.
