Fayose: PDP has decayed from the head — Taraba, Plateau governors will soon leave

Ayo Fayose

Ayo Fayose, former governor of Ekiti state, says the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can only be resolved by addressing its leadership failures.

Fayose spoke on Tuesday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, saying the opposition party is “decaying from the head”.

“When fish decays from the body, you can salvage it, but when it decays from the head, you cannot salvage it,” he said.

“Currently, the PDP has decayed from the head.”

Fayose said he has been open about the party’s internal issues and has repeatedly warned that the PDP is in trouble.

“I have not come here for one day to deceive Nigerians about PDP, and I’ve not hidden the fact that I will never leave PDP,” he said.

“I have also not hidden the fact that I am a great supporter of the president as a Yoruba man. I stand to be corrected, and I have said severally that PDP is in trouble.”

Fayose said he had previously predicted that three PDP governors would defect, adding that his warning had already played out.

“After my visit here three weeks ago, Governor Diri left,” he said.

“He was actually the chairman of the (PDP) campaign screening committee, but he left. Governor of Enugu left. And the third one is governor of Taraba, who was handed over by the president to the national chairman of the APC.”

He said another governor is preparing to leave the party, adding that more defections will follow.

“Another one will leave very soon. Governor of Plateau will leave,” he said.

“But I’m telling you again, after the governor of Plateau, another governor will leave. When I come back here, I will remind you again.”

Ahead of its national convention scheduled to be held on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo state, the PDP has split into two factions.

One faction is loyal to Umar Damagum, the party’s acting national chairman, while the other aligns with Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Fayose is aligned with the Wike-led bloc.

On October 31, the federal high court in Abuja stopped the PDP from going ahead with the convention.

In its ruling, James Omotosho, the presiding judge, said evidence before the court showed that the party failed to hold valid state congresses before the planned national convention as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines, as well as its own constitution.

On November 4, the Oyo state high court ordered the PDP and Damagum to proceed with the convention.

A.L. Akintola, the presiding judge, issued the order following an ex parte application filed by Folahan Malomo Adelabi.
