The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have pledged to protect consumer welfare in the petroleum industry.
In a statement on Thursday by the commission, both agencies made the pledge when Tunji Bello, FCCPC’s chief executive officer (CEO), received Farouk Ahmed, NMDPRA’s CEO, during a courtesy visit.
Speaking during the meeting, Bello reaffirmed the commission’s commitment “to ensuring consumer welfare and fair competition in the petroleum industry”.
He pledged that the commission will make every possible effort to protect Nigerian consumers, including the sector, from abuse of dominance, price manipulation, as well as other anti-consumer and anti-competitive practices.

During the visit, Ahmed sought a closer partnership with the commission to address price distortions, prevent anti-competitive conduct, and strengthen oversight in the downstream petroleum sector.
“This partnership underscores FCCPC’s statutory mandate under the FCCPA 2018 to safeguard consumers, prohibit restrictive trade practices, and promote fair, transparent markets that benefit all Nigerians,” the statement reads.
On May 8, the NMDPRA had said filling stations must comply with regulations and avoid under-dispensing fuel.

Godwin Ogbe, NMDPRA’s Kogi state coordinator, urged the public to report any filling station suspected of under-dispensing fuel, stressing that such outlets would face appropriate sanctions.
