The academic staff of the Federal College of Education, Kano, have kicked against the reversal of the status of the institution from university to college.

The teachers, who have gone on a week-long strike, accused the provosts of the affected colleges of education of sabotaging the upgrading of their institutions for selfish reasons.

Abubakar Sadeeq Haruna, chairman of the FCE Kano academic staff union, said on Friday the reversal was upheld despite the memo forwarded to the federal government highlighting the advantages of the upgrade.

The union urged the federal government to subject the planned reversal to a national debate.

Rabi Jubirila, the provost, said the reversal was based on a memo from the federal government and denied complicity.

“Only four provosts cannot be too powerful to influence federal government’s decision,” he said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan approved the upgrade of four colleges of education to federal universities of education to award bachelor degrees a few weeks to the end of his tenure.
